Need
Over the last decade, 380 U.S. coal power plants have shut, leaving only 217 operating. While beneficial for the environment, this has been bad for coal ash supply.
Coal ash substitutes 30 percent of cement by helping bind sand and gravel to make concrete. As ash supply falls, cement consumption, and therefore cost increases.
By 2040 there will be a 40Mton shortage of coal ash translating to a 15% increase in cost of concrete.

Vision
PHNX Materials refines the 2.9B tons of U.S. landfilled coal ash into valuable end-products.
PHNX views landfilled ash as an abundant domestic resource.
We are a team of Stanford engineers and chemists, and have developed technology to process this contaminated material into ASTM grade fly-ash to strengthen domestic infrastructure. As we strip away the impurities, we create value-added products like aluminum, rare earth elements and fertilizers.

Impact
Not only will processing this material help lower global emissions by 0.7 GTCO2 – we will also create a new domestic supply of a critical material and other valuable minerals. By cleaning up hundreds of landfills around the country in an environmentally responsible way, we will support communities hit hardest by the shutting down of coal plants – creating jobs and improving their families’ quality of life.
